New park in Austral

Overview

Council is excited to let you know that a new local park is being built in central Austral. As friends and neighbours of the Austral community, you will have a beautiful new 1.2 hectare park where you can walk, sit, relax, play, socialise, and enjoy the outdoors - with shady trees and amenities.

The park is being built on land Council bought in April 2023 next to Austral Public School, at the corner of Tenth Avenue and Biffin Lane. The land was previously used for farming and soon will be a place for everyone to enjoy.

Presently, the park site is being remediated with old structures removed. Following this, the park will be opened in stages, with a grassed field provided first.

At Council, we would like to know what a new park means for you, your family and friends.

We have prepared a draft masterplan that shows many elements of the Austral Park from open space, different play equipment, active play courts including basketball and tennis, running activities, a yarning circle to sit and chat, pop-up market areas and connecting walking and cycling paths.

Where is the new park?

The park will be located next to Austral Public School at the corner of Tenth Avenue and Biffin Lane and is being built on land Council bought in April 2023. The park will be co-located with the Austral Neighbourhood Centre and future community centre.

What is proposed?

The new park will be a place for the growing community to connect, play and enjoy. It will provide much-needed open space and enhance the natural environment.

Council has developed a draft masterplan and concept design based on key priorities and needs identified by early community engagement. This concept design is a starting point for discussion and it will be refined based on community input during the consultation.

The following elements have been proposed as options for the community to consider:

  • A community space (e.g. for events and markets)
  • Yarning circle (a place for people to socialise)
  • Multi-use courts
  • Tennis court
  • Picnic area
  • Open lawn
  • Off-leash dog park
  • Play equipment
  • Fitness equipment
  • Walking trail.

The park will be located in Austral, next to Austral Public School at the corner of Tenth Avenue and Biffin Lane.

The park will be built on land Council bought in April 2023. The land was previously used for poultry farming and is currently being remediated. Following this, turf will be laid and part of the site will be opened to everyone.

Council has created a draft masterplan and concept design and the following features have been suggested as options for the community to consider:

  • A community space (e.g. for events and markets)
  • Yarning circle (a place for people to socialise)
  • Multi-use courts
  • Tennis court
  • Picnic area
  • Open lawn
  • Off-leash dog park
  • Play equipment
  • Fitness equipment
  • Walking trail.

The draft masterplan was developed based on early consultation with the community, including the Family Fun Day on 7 October 2023 and consultation with Austral Public School.

From the early community consultation, the following needs were identified for the park:

  • A fun place with lots of different activities and play equipment.
  • An active place for games and sports.
  • A network of walking/cycling connections that link up Austral.
  • A community gathering place for picnics and events.
  • A place for adventure and discovery through the natural landscape.
  • A peaceful place to relax and wind down.
  • A place that is connected to Austral Public School and has educational value.

Council has taken that feedback and developed a draft masterplan and concept design with a range of potential features that could be included in the park. Council is inviting the community to provide feedback to help shape the new local park.
